What is Ikigai?

Ikigai is a Japanese concept that translates to “a reason for being.” It’s the convergence of one’s passions, talents, and values with what the world needs, resulting in a fulfilling life.
This profound idea is said to be a key reason behind the high life expectancy in Japan, particularly in Okinawa, known for its large population of centenarians.
Origins and Meaning

The term “Ikigai” comes from two Japanese words: ‘iki’ (生き), meaning life, and ‘gai’ (甲斐), meaning worth or value.
Though intrinsic to Japanese culture, Ikigai has roots that reflect universal human experiences. It denotes the little joys and satisfaction derived from the flow of everyday life rather than grand accomplishments.
The popular Western interpretation, often visualized through a Venn diagram intersecting what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for, interprets Ikigai as a holistic pursuit of a meaningful career.
In reality, the authentic Japanese understanding emphasizes personal fulfilment and richness in life beyond one’s work or profession.
How to Find Your Ikigai
1. Self-Reflection: Begin by asking yourself four core questions:
   – What do you love?
   – What are you good at?
   – What does the world need?
   – What can you be rewarded for?
2. Exploration: Delve into activities and pursuits that resonate with your answers. Experiment and adjust as necessary. Realizing Ikigai is a dynamic journey, involving trying out different paths.
3. Daily Practice: Foster gratitude and mindfulness. Focus on small joys and moments; Japanese culture emphasizes appreciating the journey as much as the destination.

4. Community Connection: Often, Ikigai is closely linked to one’s role and contribution within a community, highlighting the importance of relationships and shared experiences in finding personal meaning.

Ikigai can be a transformative pursuit that aligns daily activities with a sense of purpose, offering a model for universal well-being and satisfaction.

Engaging with Ikigai invites introspection and iterative exploration to discover what makes life genuinely rewarding, both personally and collectively.
